Creating new features for Toca Boca Days

Overview

Hang out, make friends, have fun! Players create their own avatar in this online 3D multiplayer game and explore a vibrant world full of secrets. They can dress up, decorate their homes, and play a variety of mini games with friends.

At Toca Boca Days, my focus was on building many of the core features in order to support the scaling needed for global launch.

My role

UX/UI Designer, July 2024 – July 2025

At Toca Boca Days I worked on several key features, including the hard currency shop, task system, onboarding flow, and NPC dialogue system.

For most of my assignment I was the sole designer in my core team. I collaborated closely with a fantastic group that included a game designer, economy designer, level designer, and another UX designer. Together we maintained a holistic approach to game design and user experience.

How I contributed

Wore a lot of hats (and liked it)

Throughout my time at Toca Boca Days I embraced a wide range of roles from conducting user research and running stakeholder workshops to designing UX flows and creating final UI art. I enjoy switching contexts and contribute wherever I'm most needed.

Took on projects with a pragmatic approach

I believe in designing for real-world use. That means validating ideas early, staying close to both user needs and business goals, and finding solutions that are both feasible and fun.

Kept projects in motion

I proactively drive projects forward by clarifying open questions, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring ideas move from concept to execution. I don’t wait for perfect conditions but instead build momentum with what's available.

Methods and processes

At Toca Boca, making sure kids have fun while staying safe is always the top priority. The features I delivered were often driven by business needs, and a big partof my work was trying to find the user needs in that, and identify key touchpoints where we needed to consult our child safety partner.

Much of my work involved facilitating collaboration between stakeholders and the development team. My best work came from projects where I could involve developers early in the concept phase, building alignment and a shared understanding.

I regularly conducted user tests with kids to identify pain points and gather feedback, then iterated on my designs based on those insights.
